Step Up Challenge Launch - February 2022

Marking the start of Children’s Mental Health Week in February 2022, the CTM RIIC Hub worked with Newydd Housing Association and Cardiff and Vale RIIC Hub to launch the ‘Step Up Challenge’.

The ‘Step Up’ challenge saw teens tracking 12.5K steps, the equivalent to 10km, in return for points to spend on wellbeing activities or healthy food.

The challenge was run through Newydd Housing Association’s Get Fit Wales project, a free programme that supports children and young people to improve their physical and mental wellbeing.

We worked with our partners to engage local schools, and in total, over 100 young people took part, walking a total of 1,250,000 steps.

The challenge was featured on ITV Wales News at prime time on a Friday evening, and as a result, more schools have enquired about taking part in Get Fit Wales.

Scott Tandy, Regeneration Officer at Newydd Housing said:

"Our Getfit.Wales step-up challenge provided opportunity for young people to try something new and show others what is possible.

Over 100 young people took part, which for many was their first-time taking part in a 10K challenge. We hope that following the success of this challenge, we can continue to support local Schools, Community groups and individuals to build upon their success by developing strong positive habits through our website Getfit.Wales."

Some of the responses from young people taking part in the Step Up Challenge are captured below:
